Be Yourself

We carry about us the burden of what thousands of people have said and the memories of all our misfortunes. To abandon all that is to be alone, and the mind that is alone is not only innocent but young – not in time or age – but young, innocent and alive at whatever age — and only such a mind can see that which is proof and that which is not measurable by words. Jiddu Krishnamurti

It is difficult to gain a renewed perspective on our own lives. Although we are constantly in touch with various parts our consciousness, our understanding of our self is tainted by the words and reactions of countless encounters. Young children have very few self-conscious foibles. Doubt, worry, fear, anxiety, and other emotional contradictions take root later in the expressed, or implied, reaction of others to us.

At birth we are innocent. But soon we meet with failure and misfortune to one degree or another. The words or opinions of others take on greater meaning because humans are social creatures. Humans band together for many reasons such as shared beliefs or out of necessity. In order to survive our learned behavior includes the consideration of the impression we make on others. How we are perceived can subjugate our own viewpoint to our own detriment. Our self-view becomes tinted from self-criticism which is altered by the opinions of others being injected into our heart-mind.

Time alone restores our perspective. Being alone, our self-image begins to refocus on our own thoughts and drains the power from the harmful opinions of others. We begin to gain a truer view on the world. Sadly, this deep introspection often comes after a tragedy has struck. Some world-shaking event (disease, divorce, death) has occurred and in order to survive we must re-establish our center. To do this requires dedication to knowing the unadorned truth.

Once you become centered, the shackles of thousands of thoughts, which are not your own, fall away. This unburdening frees you to simply – Be Yourself And this true self is transcendent, and a divine blessing.
